Religious School

boys-coloring300wOur religious school is a place where children and their families learn. While the curriculum includes Hebrew, Torah, Jewish history, and worship, perhaps most importantly, it is where a foundation develops for an appreciation of and dedication to Judaism.

At Temple Sinai Religious School, parent involvement is a primary expectation. Examples of how our Temple families participate together with their children include the following activities:

  • Holiday Happenings for 4 year olds and their families – 4 year olds and their families join together once a month to learn about the Jewish holidays through games, crafts, and song. This program is free of charge and open to the community.
  • Model Kabbalat Shabbat – Children in Kindergarten through 3rd grade are joined by their parents on Sunday morning as they learn to Welcome Shabbat during their “Model Shabbat Welcome” program.
  • Parent Connection – Kindergarten through 3rd grade students and parents read Jewish books together creating Jewish memories as they prepare their project for presentation in class.
  • Family Shabbat service and dinner - Third grade students receive their first Siddur (prayer book) at a special Shabbat service preceded by a family dinner. Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 each lead a Friday evening Shabbat service and enjoy a family dinner preceding worshiping together.
  • 5th Grade Pre-B’nai Mitzvah Workshop entitled “Mitzvot We Perform” is offered to our 5th grade students and parents. This program focuses on the Mitzvot preparation for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience.
  • 6th Grade Bar & Bat Mitzvah Workshops: Two workshops are offered to our 6th grade students and parents on Sunday morning during religious school. These are designed to familiarize our students and parents with the Torah and the Shabbat service.
  • 6th Grade Family Workshop: A workshop for parents and students explores peer pressures and the relationship between parents and students. Developed in conjunction with URJ’S Sacred Choices, this workshop takes place on Sunday mornings during Religious School hours.
  • 7th Grade: “Are My Parents Always Right?” Workshop I and II - Two special family programs are offered that explore the relationship of parents and children in the pre-teen years. This workshop takes place on Monday evening during regular 7th grade religious school.
  • Hannukah Family Day: This annual tradition provides a day of celebrating, eating and learning for all Temple children and their families.
  • High School Parent Education - A seminar is offered to high school parents that explores parenting, Judaism, alcohol and sexuality. The seminar is conducted by a psychologist.
