L’Taken Social Justice Seminar in Washington, DC

Join Temple Sinai to gain unique understanding of the political process and see how Jewish values are relevant in today’s world.  We will learn about relevant issue to us personally and collectively, as Jews and as Americans.  The trip culminates with meetings in congressional and senatorial offices on Capitol Hill where we will personally lobby for the issues of our choice.

When is the trip?

  • We leave Friday, January 11, 2013 around noon and return Monday, January 14, 2013 in the evening.

What are the goals of the trip?

  • Build community among our teens
  • Learn about issues that are relevant to us personally and collectively, as Jews and as Americans
  • Deepen teens understanding of the political process and commitment to social justice
  • Strengthen the Jewish identity of our teens

What will the teens actually be doing?

  • The trip culminates with the exciting opportunity to meet with members of congress or their staff in their congressional offices
  • Participate with over 300 teens from across America in programs on a range of topics, including Israel, the environment, reproductive rights, LGBTQ civil rights, church/state separation, international relations and more!
  • Visit the National Holocaust Memorial Museum and Smithsonian National Mall
  • Celebrating Havdallah at the Jefferson Memorial
  • Enjoy free time in Georgetown, on the National Mall and at Pentagon Row

 What is the financial commitment?

  • The cost of the program is $500 which include program fees, museum entrance fees, hotel, transportation and most meals. Scholarships are available confidentially through Rabbi Millstein. Space is extremely limited. Applicants will be accepted in the order they are received.

Who is eligible for this program?

  • The trip is open to all high school students in 10-12 grade who are members of Temple Sinai.

What are the logistical details?

  • All travel is by coach bus
  • Participants stay at the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel in Arlington, VA
  • All meals are included except dinner on Saturday and Sunday and lunch on Monday

Do I need special attire?

  • Yes, students should bring nice clothes for Kabbalat Shabbat, business attire for the visit to Capitol Hill, and casual clothes for the rest of the weekend.  Business attire is required for Monday’s visit to the Hill.
  • We will be outside for extended periods of time. Be sure to check www.weather.com to determine appropriate clothing.
  • Participants will be walking about a mile (much of it uphill) during Monday’s visit to Capitol Hill, so their choice of footwear should be comfortable and low-heeled.
